2026 Hailed as the Age of the Amphibian Adventure.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these amphibious creatures. Considering a collection of frogs is called an army, it appears they are staking their claim.
A Legacy of Leaping
Croaking characters are anything but new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a niche presence. Yet, their popularity has noticeably increased in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are serious Frog Games.
A Data-Driven Dive
To understand this phenomenon, I undertook a thorough analysis into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The findings reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The frog's rising status in the public consciousness is partially apparent elsewhere, such as the resurgence of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. But, the trend in gaming appears particularly powerful.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
Honestly, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs possess natural creative potential for game developers.
- Weird Little Guys: They are ideally shaped to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a fan favorite in any game.
- Dynamic Mechanics: Their long tongues and sticky tongues facilitate a host of unique mechanics.
Many of the showcased games smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance
So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the largest year yet.
When these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase often do—we could very well be witnessing a full-blown frog gaming renaissance.
