English Football Updates: Mejbri Banned for Spitting; City Boss Says 'Back Line Must Get Better'
From the world of top-flight developments, a notable midfielder has been handed a substantial suspension, a head coach has pointed out a player's mistakes to prove an argument, and the Manchester City manager has demanded defensive betterment following a wild victory.
Mejbri Issued Four-Game Suspension and Fine
The Clarets' midfielder Hannibal Mejbri was handed a four-match ban and a financial fine for improper behaviour during October's fixture against Leeds United. The governing body confirmed Mejbri was referred an independent disciplinary panel after an incident where he spat towards away supporters around the 67-minute point during a 2-0 victory for Burnley.
A release explained: “An independent Regulatory Commission has punished Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri due to misconduct in their Premier League game against Leeds on 18 October. It was alleged that the player behaved in breach of the rules of the game and/or in an improper way and/or engaging in abusive and/or indecent behaviour through spitting at or in the area of Leeds United fans.”
The statement added, “Mejbri later admitted the charge, with the Regulatory Commission imposed a four-match suspension and a fine following proceedings. The Regulatory Commission’s written reasons for its decisions will be published in due course.” The team, now in 19th place in the Premier League standings, travel to 12th-place Newcastle on Saturday.
Maresca Points to Tosin's Errors to Prove an Argument
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has stated that a lack of experience is not a problem for his team, highlighting how centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo's years did not stop him from having poorly during a 3-1 defeat to Leeds United.
The Italian coach, who manages the most youthful team in the Premier League, rejected the idea that mentality played a part in the setback. He made his argument by criticising Tosin, the most experienced player on the pitch, who produced a mistake-riddled display at the back.
“People always mention a lack of experience after we drop points,” the coach said. “When we beat Barcelona, the draw against Arsenal, nobody was mentioning experienced players. I know that when we don’t win, people are always looking for an explanation, but I think why we didn’t win to Leeds was not down to inexperience, it was because we just weren't good enough.”
Maresca continued, “Who is the oldest one on our team on the pitch? Who was? Did he play any good? Therefore, it’s not about experience. It's that those 11 men, they were simply not up to standard.”
3. Guardiola Insists Defence 'Has to Improve'
The Manchester City manager has stated his team have taken lessons from their recent scare at Fulham and the game is now in the past. The team survived for a 5-4 victory in a incredible encounter on Tuesday, after leading 5-1 with almost an hour played.
This followed they resisted a Leeds comeback to win 3-2 in the prior fixture, it raised more questions about if they possess resilient enough to mount a title challenge against pace-setters Arsenal. “It’s forgotten,” Guardiola said. “Valuable lessons, I hope. At this level, for every team, you have to take onboard both good and bad performances and results and focus on what's next.”
“Naturally I’m concerned,” Guardiola added. “We are trying to analyse what happened, so as not to allow the goals. With the three goals against Leeds, and five goals against Fulham it shows the two sides, correct? So, we have we have done plenty of positive things. Yet how many attempts had Leeds ? Three? They scored two. That ratio is bad. And attempts for Fulham have? Five, six? So the average of chances conceded is too high. We must be better.”
Newcastle Focus New Defenders' Deals
Newcastle United's recently appointed sporting director, Ross Wilson, has made new deal negotiations with important defenders Tino Livramento and Sven Botman the priority on his to-do list for the club. He arrived after leaving Nottingham Forest recently and is reassured that playmaker Sandro Tonali is on a deal that runs to 2029 and, potentially, 2030.
That has left Wilson to focus on talks for Livramento and Botman's agents. With the former’s agreement ending in 2027 and Botman's a year later, the club's efforts have assumed a certain importance.
“My first few days after starting was when I discovered that Sandro’s contract situation is much more secure than I had thought,” said Wilson. “However, it is no secret that we wishes to extend Tino’s contract and also would want to renew Sven Botman’s too. These talks are underway.”
Manager Eddie Howe is missing Botman against the match against Burnley on Saturday, with the defender likely to remain out for at least a further period.
Nuno Says Paquetá Returns for West Ham
West Ham manager Nuno Espírito Santo has stated that Lucas Paquetá is back to the starting lineup for they face Brighton this Sunday, having completed a ban following a sending-off against Liverpool.
“That incident is behind us,” the manager remarked. “I am positive it won't happen again as he himself acknowledged the error. We discussed it in the dressing room. I am positive it is over and will not be repeated.”
He also understands the significant pressure facing his team, currently 18th ahead of the weekend fixtures. “We cannot ignore it,” he admitted. “It is a reality. We must face it. We are fighting for our top-flight status. We cannot shy away from it.”
6. Arteta Pleased with No 9 Deputy Merino
The Spanish midfielder could continue leading the line for Arsenal centre-forward despite the club's usual frontmen return from injury. The midfielder has been playing as an emergency No 9 because of injuries for Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
He scored Arsenal’s opener versus Brentford and set up Bukayo Saka for their second during a 2-0 win that maintained {their|
