{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences close call with Formula 1 marshals
Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson stated he narrowly avoided a life-threatening collision during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when a pair of track officials darted across the track directly in front of him
The alarming incident took place on the third lap when marshals were spotted on the circuit as Lawson was getting back on the race following an early pitstop to replace his compromised front wing
Competitor's Live Reaction
Moments later, Racing Bulls driver Lawson spoke to his pit wall engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Could you believe what happened? I could have... killed them"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"
"I rejoined with a fresh hard compound tires, and then I arrived at Turn One and suddenly there were two dudes running across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, frankly, it was extremely hazardous"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Evidently there's been a miscommunication somehow but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We can't understand how on a live track safety personnel can be allowed to just sprint across the track in such a way. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm confident we'll get some sort of explanation, but it really can't happen again"
Formal Inquiry in Progress
The sport's regulatory authority, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is currently investigating the circumstances
"After an occurrence at turn one, track officials was informed that debris was present on the track at the critical section of that bend" declared the regulatory authority
"On lap three, track officials were notified and made ready to enter the track and recover the debris once the entire field had cleared the area"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had made a pit stop, the orders to send personnel were withdrawn and a caution signal was displayed in that zone"
"Our inquiry continues what happened after that point"
