It's 2025, and the advertising strategy for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds seem determined to reference the classic 90s-era competition dynamic. The latest ad spot for the blue speedster's kart racer apparently uses grainy video of Nintendo's open-world racer, employing it to suggest that the opposition's game fails to maximize its expansive design.
Challenging the Competition
"Everyone's familiar with the famous franchise, it's fantastic, we don't need to feature it," the promo begins. "Consider you could blast through and compete on a higher tier?" The spot then goes on to emphasize many of CrossWorlds' defining elements, such as deep car personalization and cross-platform multiplayer.
"Alternatively, perhaps you prefer to explore at will on the open road?" the announcer asks, full of skepticism.
Previous Events of Competition
Although this isn't the first occasion that the team behind Sega's title have targeted Nintendo's game, it is certainly the bluntest they have spoken regarding the competition between titles. The advertisement also references a throwback advertisement for the Sega Genesis that informed audiences about the console's "high-speed" technology. Previously, Sega showcased its system's edge by depicting a formula car tearing around a circuit. Toward the end, it compared the Nintendo's console to an old RV that had the original kart racer playing on a tube screen fastened to the rear of the vehicle hastily attached.
Availability
CrossWorlds arrives next week on September 25 for Nintendo Switch, Sony's previous-gen system, PS5, computer, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. But, players who pre-order can jump in ahead of launch... unless they are on Switch. Well.
